Graffiti, Landscape Inscription, and Marked Places/Bodies
Studying landscapes as 'texts' is a long-standing approach in human and cultural geography. Despite this interest in the writing and reading of place, there has not been a wealth of research that examines the actual scripting and marking of landscapes-such as in the form of graffiti, signscapes, banners, memorial narratives, public art, or advertising. The session assembles papers that examine landscape inscription and marking from a variety of perspectives-whether for the purposes of political protest, commodification, government control, coping with disasters, making territorial claims, or identity expression. Spatial inscription can (and should) be defined beyond traditional notions of landscape. Cultural marking and its relationship to place occurs at a variety of scales, including body modification and tattoos. Organizers: terri moreau Derek H. Alderman Chairs: terri moreau |
