Further information is provided here on the call for papers by the Communication
Geography Specialty Group. "COMGEOG" is inviting inquiries and
submission of abstracts or organized sessions related to: (A) communication
infrastructure, diffusion and policy, or (B) representation, symbolism and
discourse. Sessions bringing together these two areas of interest are particularly
welcome.
TOPIC A
Suitable topics relating to communication infrastructure, diffusion and
policy include:
- the diffusion of wireless communications
- new social practices associated with new media
- shifting regimes of media regulation
- concentration of power in the media industries
- barriers to the diffusion of certain media in certain places
- interaction effects between various new communication technologies
- economic factors driving uneven communication access
- actor networks and communication networks
- surveillance and changing views of privacy
- transformation of time and space
- techniques for mapping communication flows and infrastructure
TOPIC B
Suitable topics relating to representation, symbolism and discourse include:
- place images in television, film, radio, etc.
- nationalist propaganda from above and below
- advertising and geographical ideologies
- coded spaces and code/space
- personal identity and its expression
- modes of democratic communication
- communicative action and citizenship
- transnational information flows
- representations of time and space
- representations of nature
